Understanding Stress:
Signs, Symptoms, Causes, and Effects
We all face different challenges and obstacles, and sometimes the pressure is hard to handle. When we feel overwhelmed, under the gun, or unsure how to meet the demands placed on us, we experience stress. In small doses, stress can be a good thing. It can give you the push you need, motivating you to do your best and to stay focused and alert. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work or drives you to study for your midterm when you'd rather be watching TV. But when the going gets too tough and life's demands exceed your ability to cope, stress becomes a threat to both your physical and emotional well-being.
Stress is a psychological and physiological response to events that upset our personal balance in some way. When faced with a threat, whether to our physical safety or emotional equilibrium, the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” response. We all know what this stress response feels like: heart pounding in the chest, muscles tensing up, breath coming faster, every sense on red alert.
The Body’s Stress Response
The “fight-or-flight” stress response involves a cascade of biological changes that prepare us for emergency action. When danger is sensed, a small part of the brain called the hypothalamus sets off a chemical alarm. The sympathetic nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol. These stress hormones race through the bloodstream, readying us to either flee the scene or battle it out.
Heart rate and blood flow to the large muscles increase so we can run faster and fight harder. Blood vessels under the skin constrict to prevent blood loss in case of injury, pupils dilate so we can see better, and our blood sugar ramps up, giving us an energy boost and speeding up reaction time. At the same time, body processes not essential to immediate survival are suppressed. The digestive and reproductive systems slow down, growth hormones are switched off, and the immune response is inhibited.
The biological stress response is meant to protect and support us. It’s what helped our stone age ancestors survive the life-or-death situations they commonly faced. But in the modern world, most of the stress we feel is in response to psychological rather than physical threats. Caring for a chronically-ill child or getting audited by the IRS qualify as stressful situations, but neither calls for either fight or flight. Unfortunately, our bodies don't make this distinction. Whether we’re stressed over a looming deadline, an argument with a friend, or a mountain of bills, the warning bells ring. And just like a caveman confronting a sabertooth tiger, we go into automatic overdrive.
If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, you may be running on stress a good portion of the time—launching into emergency mode with every traffic jam, phone call from the in-laws, or segment of the evening news. But the problem with the stress response is that the more it’s activated, the harder it is to shut off. Instead of leveling off once the crisis has passed, your stress hormones, heart rate, and blood pressure remain elevated.
Furthermore, extended or repeated activation of the stress response takes a heavy toll on the body. Prolonged exposure to stress increases your risk of everything from heart disease, obesity, and infection to anxiety, depression, and memory problems. Because of the widespread damage it can cause, it’s essential to learn how to deal with stress in a more positive way and reduce its impact on your daily life.
Signs and symptoms of stress
To get a handle on stress, you first need to learn how to recognize it in yourself. Stress affects the mind, body, and behavior in many ways— all directly tied to the physiological changes of the fight-or-flight response. The specific signs and symptoms of stress vary widely from person to person. Some people primarily experience physical symptoms, such as low back pain, stomach problems, and skin outbreaks. In others, the stress pattern centers around emotional symptoms, such as crying jags or hypersensitivity. For still others, changes in the way they think or behave predominates.
The following table lists some of the common warning signs and symptoms of stress. Use it to identify the symptoms you typically experience when you’re under stress. If you know your red flags, you can take early steps to deal with the stressful situation before it—or your emotions—spiral out of control.

Causes of stress
Top Ten Stressful Life Events
Spouse’s death
Divorce
Marriage separation
Jail term
Death of a close relative
Injury or illness
Marriage
Fired from job
Marriage reconciliation
Retirement
The potential causes of stress are numerous and highly individual. What you consider stressful depends on many factors, including your personality, general outlook on life, problem-solving abilities, and social support system. Something that's stressful to you may not faze someone else, or they may even enjoy it. For example, your morning commute may make you anxious and tense because you worry that traffic will make you late. Others, however, may find the trip relaxing because they allow more than enough time and enjoy listening to music while they drive.
The pressures and demands that cause stress are known as stressors. We usually think of stressors as being negative, such as an exhausting work schedule or a rocky relationship. However, anything that forces us to adjust can be a stressor. This includes positive events such as getting married or receiving a promotion. Regardless of whether an event is good or bad, if the adjustment it requires strains our coping skills and adaptive resources, the end result is stress.
Major life changes
Major life events are stressors. Whether it be a divorce, a child leaving home, a planned pregnancy, a move to a new town, a career change, graduating from college, or a diagnosis of cancer, the faster or more dramatic the change, the greater the strain. Furthermore, the more major life changes you’re dealing with at any one time, the more stress you’ll feel.
Daily hassles and demands
While major life changes are stressful, they are also relative rarities. After all, it’s not every day that you file for divorce or have a baby. However, you may battle traffic, argue with your family members, or worry about your finances on a daily basis. Because these small upsets occur so regularly, they end up affecting us the most.
Daily causes of stress include:
Environmental stressors – Your physical surroundings can set off the stress response. Examples of environmental stressors include an unsafe neighborhood, pollution, noise (sirens keeping you up at night, a barking dog next door), and uncomfortable living conditions. For people living in crime-ridden areas or war-torn regions, the stress may be unrelenting.
Family and relationship stressors – Problems with friends, romantic partners, and family members are common daily stressors. Marital disagreements, dysfunctional relationships, rebellious teens, or caring for a chronically-ill family member or a child with special needs can all send stress levels skyrocketing.
Work stressors – In our career-driven society, work can be an ever-present source of stress. Work stress is caused by things such as job dissatisfaction, an exhausting workload, insufficient pay, office politics, and conflicts with your boss or co-workers.
Social stressors – Your social situation can cause stress. For example, poverty, financial pressures, racial and sexual discrimination or harassment, unemployment, isolation, and a lack of social support all take a toll on daily quality of life.

Never Under Estimate Anyone
"This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you."
The barber puts a five rupee coin in one hand and two one rupee coins(1+1=2) in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, "Which do you want, son?"
The boy takes the two one rupee coins and leaves. "What did I tell you?" said the barber. "That kid never learns!"
Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store."Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take two one rupee coins instead of five rupee coin?"
The boy licked his cone and replied,*Because THE DAY I TAKE THE FIVE RUPEE COIN, THE GAME IS OVER *.

The link between man & god is FAITH: an inspirational conversation..worth reading...
An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty. He asks one of his new students to stand and.....
Prof:So you believe in God?
Student:Absolutely, sir.
Prof :Is God good?
Student:Sure.
Prof:Is God all-powerful?
Student :Yes.
Prof:My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?(Student is silent.)
Prof:You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?
Student:Yes.
Prof:Is Satan good?
Student :No.
Prof:Where does Satan come from?
Student:From...God...
Prof:That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student:Yes.
Prof:Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?
Student:Yes.
Prof:So who created evil?(Student does not answer.)
Prof:Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?
Student:Yes, sir.
Prof:So, who created them?(Student has no answer.)
Prof:Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you.Tell me, son...Have you everseen God?
Student:No, sir.
Prof:Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student:No, sir.
Prof:Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student:No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Prof:Yet you still believe in Him?
Student:Yes.
Prof:According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student:Nothing. I only have my faith.
Prof:Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.
Student:Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof:Yes.
Student:And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof:Yes.
Student:No sir. There isn't.(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student :Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student:What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Prof:Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?
Student :You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?
Prof:So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student:Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof:Flawed? Can you explain how?
Student:Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Prof:If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student:Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)
Student:Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)
Student:Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?(The class breaks out into laughter.)
Student:Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Prof:I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.
Student:That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.
NB: I believe you have enjoyed the conversation...this is a true story, and the student was none other than.........APJ Abdul Kalam, the former president of India.

Un-learning the ways of Un-love.
Because you depend on the other, possessiveness arises -- out of fear. "Who knows? The other is with me today; tomorrow he/she may not be with me. Who knows about the next moment?" [...] Out of that fear of the future, you become very possessive. You create bondage around the person you think you love.
But love cannot create a prison. If love creates a prison, then what is left for hatred to do? Love brings freedom -- love gives freedom. It is non-possessiveness. But that is possible only if you have known a totally different quality of love, one not of need but of sharing.
Love is sharing of overflowing joy. You are too full of joy, you cannot contain it, you have to share it. Then there is poetry, then there is something tremendously beautiful which is not of this world, something that comes from the beyond.
Often I say, learn the art of love. What I really mean is: learn the art of removing all that hinders love. It is a negative process. It is like digging a well -- you go on removing layers of earth, stones, rocks and then suddenly there is water. The water was always there as an undercurrent. When you remove all barriers, the water is available. So with love. Love is the undercurrent of your being. It is flowing, but there are many rocks, much earth to be removed. That's what I mean when I say: learn the art of love. It is really not learning love but un-learning the ways of un-love.

rEfLecTiOn on my iMmErsiOn... d seriOus version
Last February 1-3, we had a very exciting, fun-filled, adventurous and heart-warming IMMERSION. Everyday I had experienced different, difficult and easy challenges..
February 1, 2008
The time we had arrived at Sto. Niño, I thought that I'm really familiar with the place but in my surprise I haven't in the center of the barangay. These had increased my excitement for it. Before the opening program we already talked and asked some residents there if they know our host families, where it is located and how's their house. Asking them, I have known that my host family is just near the barangay hall. When the opening program and the distribution of the students to their respective families started, we were so excited seeing our host families and when our names and our host family were called, there was no one that go in front but after some minutes we saw Nanay Salvacion coming. She accompanied us to their home just nearby. When we reach their house, it's semi-concrete where the main house is concrete and the kitchen and front is just made of nipa and bamboos.
We then introduced each other have some stories about our own lives...After some time, Nanay ask one of her son to cook rice but he is somewhat hesitating then I go to the kitchen to have a look at it. I ask Jerry, my buddy, to prepare the rice and I will be the one to prepare the fire. After putting in fire the cooking pot, we then started deciding what to cook for lunch. There was a basin of 'kangkong” in the kitchen so we decided to cook it with sardines. We prepared the dining table and we ate altogether except for Tatay Tiburcio who was there in his farm and Kuya Rolly who Nanay said really go them with them because of some reasons. After some stories and after fixing the dining table and washing the dishes, we then asked Nanay for us to go to the school for the feeding program...
When we arrived at the school, seeing our classmates, we somewhat missed them much and asking how's their host families. We then started preparing for the for our respective activities. My tribe, the Partribu Triblets, was assigned in the painting committee. But during the preparation, we were not able to help in painting because of few painting materials so we just helped prepare the food. The time we are preparing spaghetti, I really find it difficult to cook it because there were many supervising the work that will make feel irritated but thankfully we had made it right for still there a great cooperation in us.
After the successful program, we went to the beach to rest and roam around the beautiful beach of Sto. Niño. We also went to our classmates' houses to visit them. I and Jerry then went home to already start preparing for our dinner. Our dinner was then fried fish and souped fish. It was about before dinner when Ate Rochelle came from her work at Tigaon. She is the mother of the little baby in our house. After dinner and fixing all, we already slept early because we were so tired and exhausted by day's activities.
February 2, 2008
The second day, Jerry and I woke early for we will be the one to prepare the breakfast. We then started to prepare and cook the spaghetti we had brought. It was somewhat to prepare like how we had prepared during the feeding. We then share in a delicious and memorable breakfast. We just have a problem for one of my brother does not eat anything with meat, pork, beef or chicken, so we just opened a can of sardines for him. I am really surprised of such unusual behavior.
After taking breakfast, we decided to bring Tatay breakfast because he already there early in the morning to plow his farm. We walked about six kilometer back and forth through rice fields and riversides. It was a very tiring activity yet a fun-filled one because we had a nice time with my brothers. We went home about 10:30 and we then rest for some time and took our bath on the other house where there are also immersees.
After our lunch, we then went to the school for the Socials. Our tribe with Alab tribe of Pin-Pin tried to practice and think what we will present during the socials but because of lack of cooperation we just end up on a song number. Before the socials, we had really find hard to look for participants for our class game made of families with their immersee. And also during the game, it so hard to manage because some of our classmates don't help during our class game but still we made it right. After some instruction after the Socials we went home already.
When we got home, Nanay is already preparing for our dinner . We then helped her preparing the malunggay leaves. Roger, my little brother, said that he want us to taste and try their “specialty”, Lucky Me with malunggay leaves. It is taste really good. After we had finish eating. Two of our classmates went to our house and its already 8:00. Nanay then told us to also go out because during the first night we haven't go out so we went out with my three brothers. We then went to some of our classmates' houses to encourage them to go with us and we also met some classmates on the road so we just decided to go together and have a bonfire near the beach. We were until before 10:00 when we saw some big flashlights we already knew that's it's Ma'am Bigs. Before we really don't intend to run and we want to wait for her for when she is already walking toward us, some of us shouted and ran away so we also an away. We had really ran fast that my one of my brother ask me why we are running. We reached home exactly 10:00 and after washing our ourselves we already sleep. It was really tiring being a Wonder Kid.
February 3, 2008
We had been woken up the instant hard rain that watered our house. There were hole in the roof of our house so when it rains outside it also rain inside. We then started to prepare for our breakfast. We just coked some packs of instant noodles. We just finished breakfast when the chapel bell stated to ring... We then took a bath. I was then being called by nature but I can't withstand our type D comfort room so I just kept it until the mass. When we went to the chapel, we then saw my fellow classmates and we started talking about what had happened last night. When Ma'am Bigs came to us, we felt differently and my buddy slipped his lips thus Ma'am had known that we are guilty of what had happened last night being the Wonder Kids.
After the mass, I went to one of my classmates house to take C.R. Then we went to have some walk and decided to go home to prepare for our departure. When we got home, Nanay had already prepared lunch and we just helped her arrange the table. When we were already eating we started thanking them for a very nice stay and experience with them. After bidding goodbyes and thank yous we started packing our things and prepared our token and the card given to us. We then have some family pictures and the documentation team also went on our house to take our picture as a family. When we were already in the jeepney, we waved our hands when we saw Nanay and Ate Rochelle. We will really miss them much.
And that's what happened in my wonderful immersion.
--challenges I experienced during the immersion--
- I had really find hard to seek in through the immersion especially when we and Nanay are telling stories about ourselves because I am not a person telling much about myself and sometimes I can't relate what Nanay and Jerry are talking about.
- I find it hard to take a bath because we still have to go to the neighbor's house just to take a bath where it is very open.
- It is also very hard to have a C.R in our house because the C.R. there is not that good.
Deciding on our group's presentation is very difficult for most of my group members is not cooperating that's we haven't presented. - It is a challenge being a Wonder Kid.
- - Reflection- -
The immersion, as a whole, was so significant to me. It had really taught many thing about the reality of life.
One of significant experiences I had during the immersion was when we walked about six kilometers just to send breakfast to Tatay who was on the farm on the other barangay of Mabca. We walked through rice fields and riversides. We had been somewhat lost cause what we had walked through is not the regular way to get there so walk a longer distance just to get there. I had really appreciated Tatay's hard work and industry for goes there too early not taking breakfast and walking a long distance everyday to attend the farm that is not really his but is only attending it and the pay is during the harvest time.
I was also struck by Nanay kindness and generosity because you could already call their house a public one for if goes to their house and ask for some coffee or other she will really give some even though it just enough for them. That's why their supply of such are fast to run out.
My host family was very good and kind to us. Nanay Salvacion is a very kind and soft-hearted mother and Tatay Tiburcio is a very hardworking father.
Every time we are sitting in the balcon, preparing and eating meal, we are telling stories. Nanay, always tells us their way of life about their family and also her problems encountered. She is also telling us stories somewhat gossips about those in our neighborhood.
During immersion, I am so thankful for is that we had enough and good food to it and clean water. Iam also very thankful that we are eating together for at home we really don't eat together. I am also grateful that I am not struck by any sickness and that I'm always healthy and that no bad event had happened to me. I am also thankful that every moment of the immersion had been so important to me.
I learned from these experiences during the reality of life that we are not the only people here on earth. I had learned to appreciate all the things that I have and be contented with it for we are already so blessed compared to those in the area who are already with the simple things they have. I also learned the value of family for there they have the strong bond that strengthens their family. It had me miss my family so much during and after the immersion. What struck me most is their sense of community that you will not see in the urban areas and I don't in my own place. There is that care and love for their neighbors.
During the immersion process, I know that Jesus is always with me and worked in me for He had helped me seek in through the immersion. He helped me know and understand the true essence of this activity. I know that He called me to walk barefoot and to leave my doubts and reservations to this immersion and just feel and go with the flow of the immersion.
Authentic Christian Humanism
During the immersion, I have responded to living out Authentic Christian Humanism by being the true me and letting myself be drawn to the true essence of the immersion and by doing my best to make this a fruitful experience.
My response is just a simple one for I know that even though this is just simple yet it can make a great difference to me and others.
I know that I have listened to the people I had encountered. They taught me to really appreciate the value of family and contentment. I really learned a lot from Nanay and Tatay.
Feelings, thoughts and reactions
At first, I feel bored for I know the place is very familiar to me and I feel no excitement but when I reach the barangay, I still haven't been there and that brought again the excitement in me. The time I saw my host family's description, I really thought they are such a big family. The time we first talked with Nanay I really feel awkward for I think she's somewhat strict but sooner I gained confidence in her. When Nanay asked us why we are here we then replied that we are for an immersion and that we will live with them to experience a new kind of environment and learn about the realities of life.
Nagawa ko bang magpakatao?
This is a question that is really hard to answer but I can say that during the immersion nagawa kong magpakatao. It because I know I became a true person showing the real me and leaving my reservations and doubts and letting myself be really immersed within a new environment , a new life and undertaking.
